Meet the Mind Behind the Words
Born and raised in the City of Joy, Kolkata, Devamalya De was destined to dance with words. With a mother deeply immersed in English literature and a father rooted in Bengali prose and engineering, storytelling ran in his veins like an unbroken legacy. Inspired by Tagore, he penned his first Bengali poem in Class 5, a spark that soon ignited into an undying passion for literature.
Yet, life had another canvas for him. A Civil Engineer by profession, he found poetry not just in verses but in the very foundations of construction—sculpting skylines with bricks, steel, and stone, much like he crafts emotions with ink and paper.
A Turning Point & A Writer’s Rebirth
The year 2015 was a watershed moment. Amidst shifting landscapes—both literal and literary—Devamalya launched his Facebook page Stories123, challenging himself to post a story every day. What started as a routine soon evolved into a calling, pushing him deeper into the world of storytelling.
Then came Corona, an era of uncertainty that paradoxically unlocked new doors. His work on a hospital construction project was life-changing, but so was his acceptance into the Himalayan Writing Retreat—a transformative experience that connected him to an ecosystem of passionate storytellers.
Soon, recognition followed. Same Boat Theatre Collective showcased his debut play, Locked Down Homemaker, across New York, London, and New Delhi. His writing found an international audience when his story was selected for Living a Wealthy Life (2017), published by an American press.
Books That Became Milestones
With an unrelenting drive, Devamalya brought his solo works to life. His first Bengali poetry collection, Sravasti Aritro Upakhyan (June 2022), was swiftly followed by Aliyak (July 2022), a stunning anthology of free-verse English poetry.
His journey into historical fiction came with Flight of Deities, a soul-stirring experience that deepened his understanding of storytelling and editing. Then, in July 2024, he took another leap—this time into non-fiction, with Maxims for Modern Warfare, earning critical acclaim.
A Future Brimming with Stories
With more books in the pipeline, Devamalya continues to breathe life into stories, each one a testament to his ceaseless quest for literary expression. Whether through fiction, poetry, or thought-provoking essays, his mission remains the same: to craft words that resonate, inspire, and endure.
